Katie Johnston, LMFT

Licensed Marriage and Family therapist

Katie, (she/her), is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist ( #152136). who works with children, teens, adults, and parents navigating the full range of emotional, developmental, and relational challenges that arise across childhood and family life. While she works with clients of all ages, her deepest expertise lies with children between the ages of 5 and 14 and the parents who love them — a population she has spent over a decade working alongside in schools and clinical settings.

Clinically, Katie draws on an integrative, relationship-first approach informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, and the Yale University SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) model. She meets clients where they are, grounded in the core belief that every person is doing their best with the tools they have — and that the work of therapy is about expanding that toolkit, together. She is committed to culturally responsive, social justice-informed care — honoring each client’s identity, context, and lived experience as central to the therapeutic work.

With a warm, curious, and open presence, Katie supports young people and families working through anxiety, big emotions, behavioral challenges, life transitions, and identity. She approaches every client with genuine kindness — not as a clinical stance, but as a foundational value — and creates space where both children and adults feel seen, safe, and capable of growth.

Before joining Practice SF, Katie spent over a decade working with young people across outdoor education, private middle schools, and K–8 school counseling settings. That breadth of experience — from the trail to the classroom to the counselor’s office — gives her a uniquely grounded and practical lens for understanding children in context, collaborating with parents, and strengthening the bridge between home and school. She has extensive experience delivering professional development to educators and brings that same spirit of partnership to her clinical work.

Katie lives in San Rafael with her husband, daughter, and dog. Outside of work, you’ll find her moving her body outdoors — hiking, camping, and soaking up Marin’s natural beauty — and volunteering at Slide Ranch, where she gets her hands in the garden and connects with the land.
