Maya Negash, LCSW
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Maya (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (CA#139378) from Washington, DC, who joined the Practice SF team in July 2026. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Virginia Tech and her Master of Social Work degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Maya works with children, adolescents, and adults navigating anxiety, self-esteem issues, life transitions, relationship challenges, and other emotional and behavioral concerns.
Maya brings many years of experience providing mental health services to diverse and historically underserved communities across school-based, outpatient, and community settings. Much of her clinical work has focused on supporting children and adolescents in schools, where she collaborated closely with students, families, educators, and multidisciplinary teams to address emotional, behavioral, academic, and social challenges. She has extensive experience supporting students receiving special education services, including those with IEPs and 504 Plans, as well as youth navigating anxiety, ADHD, self-harm behaviors, identity-related concerns, complex trauma, and grief. This work provided Maya with a strong understanding of how learning, behavior, mental health, family systems, and environmental factors intersect to influence a child's success both in and outside of school.
Maya's therapeutic style is warm, authentic, and collaborative. Her approach combines empathy, humor, and validation with honest reflection and practical skill-building, creating a space where clients feel supported while developing the tools and confidence to navigate life's challenges. Committed to providing culturally responsive and affirming care, Maya recognizes the important role that culture, identity, family systems, and experiences play in shaping mental health and wellbeing. As a bi-racial and multicultural clinician, she is especially attuned to how identity and cultural background can influence emotional experiences, relationships, and help-seeking.
Through a trauma-informed lens, Maya integrates evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and play-based interventions, tailoring treatment to each client's unique strengths, developmental stage, and goals.
Maya is especially passionate about working with adolescents and young adults as they navigate identity development, peer relationships, family dynamics, self-esteem, emotional regulation, and life transitions. She values collaborating with parents, caregivers, educators, and other providers to support clients across multiple environments and foster lasting change.
Born in Los Angeles and raised in the Washington, DC area, Maya is excited to be back on the West Coast. In her free time, she enjoys baking, reading, being outdoors, and spending time with family. She is settling into life in the Bay Area, discovering new favorite restaurants and coffee shops as she prepares for her first Bay to Breakers.
